January, 2016 – Old San Juan, USVI
W
e
had been looking forward to Old San Juan and it did not disappoint.
Old San Juan was founded in 1521 and contains beautifully preserved
examples of 16th and 17th century Spanish
Colonial architecture. The streets are paved with adoquines - blue
grey stones originally used as ballast in Spanish ships.
The old
city is still partially enclosed by walls which date to 1683 and is
guarded at each end by two massive stone fortresses, the Castillo San
Cristobal (1634) guards the city from land attacks a
nd
Castillo San Felipe del Morro guards the port. We did our own
walking tour from one end to the other. Fantastic views from San
Felipe over the ocean. Definitely a place we would like to return
to.
